Tuckahoe Big Cat Swim Program

Tuckahoe offers an adult swim program open to all members 18 years and older. The program offers the opportunity to work out in a group setting to build your aerobic base, refine your technique, and improve your general lap swimming skills. Our goal is to provide a welcoming and fun environment for adults to swim together.

The program is coached by our Head Swim Coach and Aquatics Director Torey Ortmayer, and will be offered on a weekly basis throughout the year. No extensive competitive swimming experience is required – it is recommended you are able to proficiently swim freestyle at least 50m without stopping. We will aim to swim at least 1500 – 2000+ meters each workout and will be able to differentiate groups based on ability level. Come willing to learn and try your best – we will offer a free trial practice for anyone unsure about registering and wanting to test the waters first.

During the winter months, we will not have practice when the wind chill is below 37 degrees or we are experiencing inclement weather. An email will be sent to registered ticket holders in advance notifying the group of cancelations.

Each day, participants will need to provide their tickets to participate. Please purchase in advance using the form below or at the front desk – all ticket packets can be received at the front desk.

Practice Schedule

September – May: Tuesday + Thursday 7am – 8am

Memorial Day – End of July: Monday – Friday 645am – 745am

Training Program

7 Weeks to Summer (4/12 – 5/26)
As we get back into spring we will start with longer warm ups with a good mix of drill, scull, and kick to help us get our body in shape by moving properly. 1-2 main sets with longest distance in repeats being ~100yds or less with longer rest. The focus is on quality while holding heart rate in the aerobic zone.
Aerobic June (5/31 – 7/1) – With Big Cats moving from 2x/week to 5x/week we have time and space to expand our aerobic base. We will work on being able to swim stronger for longer. Longer sets/repeats to build muscular and cardiovascular endurance.
Championship Season (7/5 – 7/29) – Hopefully we have opportunities to potentially compete (Parent relays after Saturday meets if nothing else – working on The Big Cat Invite). Mixing aerobic training with more speed work and race details – find your inner competitive athlete!
